How to get a home insurance quote

You can get a home insurance quote from most companies online or by phone. esure’s online form is easy and takes just a few minutes to complete.

Step 1 – a declaration

This is a checklist on the property you want to insure. It includes the property type, whether it’s ever empty for long periods, if it’s let, whether it’s in a good state of repair, whether it’s at risk of flood or subsidence and if it is a listed building. You’ll also be taken through a declaration on your insurance claims history for this address. This will include questions on past claims, whether you work in certain professions and if you have any criminal convictions or police cautions – you won’t be asked for any specific details, a simple yes or no will start your online quote.

Step 2 – your personal information

Next you’ll be asked for your personal information, including your date of birth, the address of the property you’d like insurance for and when you’d like your cover to start – esure can insure you from the next day or at any point in the next 90 days. After this you’ll be asked for information on the age of the house, what claims you’ve made since living there (if any) and who will be living there with you. You’ll also be asked for ownership details, and for details on existing security measures at the property.

Step 3 – joint policy holder details

If you’d like to have a joint policy holder, you’ll need to have their information ready, including their date of birth.

Step 4 – your quote

Finally you’ll be given a quote based on all the information you’ve provided. At this point you’ll be able to adjust the cover you want by choosing additional options like accidental damage, cover for your belongings away from home, pest cover, family legal protection and home emergency cover. You’ll also have the option of changing your voluntary excess – agreeing to pay a higher excess could lower your premiums. You’ll also be asked for any specified item details for contents insurance, these are bicycles worth more than £500 and other valuables of up to £1,500.

Step 5 – buying safely online

Once you are happy with your quote and cover you can buy securely online too. Payment can be made in one lump sum or by monthly instalments, whichever is easiest for you. As soon as your payment details have been accepted you’ll be given a summary of your policy details with a start date, which can be as soon as the next day. Your full policy documents will then be sent out to you by first class post.

Should you have any queries while you are getting your quote there are prompts and explanations as you go along. You can also choose to speak to a customer service adviser on 0845 603 7874, from 8am – 8pm Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm on Saturdays and between 10am – 2pm on Sundays.
